- autotrophic picoplankton such as Cyanobium, Synechococcus, Cyanodictyon, Aphanothece and Aphanocapsa (ecology, cultivation and isolation, ecophysiological studies, phylogenetic characterisation and differenciation)

- isolation and cultivation of freshwater bacteria and cyanobacteria

- microbial food web; interactions cyanobacteria or bacteria vs. protozoa and zooplankton

- phylogenetic studies of Betaproteobacteria (Polynucleobacter and Limnohabitans)

Research strategy

Research on cyanobacterial and bacterial ecology in combination of field (including mesocosms experiments with dialyses bags) and laboratory work (light / temperature / nutrient gradient experiments, grazing experiments, competition experiments) as well as of classical microbiological (isolation and cultivation) and modern molecular techniques (such as quantitative PCR, sequencing and genome analyses), epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry.
